When you think of grounding, you might immediately think either of vague memories of a long-ago physics lesson, or your hippie alarm bells might be ringing.
In science-speak, grounding means to remove excess electrical charge from an object. In yoga/wellbeing/hippie-dippie speak, this removal of excess charge applies both on an emotional level as well as a more physical, biomedical level.
The excess charge of emotions, thoughts or impressions swirling through you can give rise to feelings of stress, anxiety, panic or just a general sense of commotion in your headspace.
Use these techniques to dispel that overwrought, scattered energy whenever you feel it arising. Make these a habit and may you always be grounded, stable and secure.
1. Walk on the earth – yes, barefoot.
“The Earth maintains a negative electrical potential on its surface. When you are in direct contact with the ground (walking, sitting, or lying down on the earth’s surface) the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, bringing it to the same electrical potential as the earth. In other words, when you are in contact with the earth directly, its tranquil energy naturally is conducted through you and you become grounded.” – from the Spiritual Catalyst http://tealswan.com/articles/how-to-ground-yourself-all-about-grounding
2. Take a salt bath
Himalayan crystal salts are generally regarded as the purest salt, coming from ancient sea salt deposits deep in the Himalayan mountains, and have the highest mineral content. Epsom salts have a high magnesium sulfate content, which when absorbed through the skin, draws out toxins from the body, relaxes the muscles and reduces swelling.
Not only does soaking in a hot bath feel amazing, the natural properties of sea salt are cleansing, detoxifying and again, highly effective in neutralizing any excessive charge in your body.
3. Move your body
When you’re stuck running in circles on the hamster wheel in your head, nothing grounds you more than moving your body. When you move your body, you are experiencing your existence in a very visceral, almost simplistic way.
Did any of these in particular work for you? Do you have your own favourite way of grounding yourself?
